Forklift RFID Reader A Strong Sell

Despite the growing RFID market, infrastructure costs remain a major problem for companies planning to implement RFID programs. LXE Inc. has developed an forklift based RFID reader that might be a healthy, cost cutting alternative to traditional readers. While a wonderful idea, there are many challenges building a reader of this kind. The outcome of such a system could be cost effective in the long run however. Both end users and equipment vendors could improve efficiency by tagging both pallets and storage locations. Companies’ can now have timely confirmation of where products are stored, and will save time by eliminating manual bar code scans. According to Frontline Today:

Other companies are also working on forklift readers. International Paper developed a system with Matrics Inc. (now part of Symbol Technologies) that uses readers on clamp trucks to track rolls of paper in one of its facilities. Additional readers on the truck use a grid of tags buried in the facility floor for location tracking. The company is able to not only locate specific rolls of paper, but also evaluate material flow through the facility.
