AMTSystems PatientSafe suite is now offering the Surgichip RFID tag, a stick-on chip that will be implemented in hospital operating rooms to avoid operations being performed on the wrong patient or body part. While these hospital O.R. mishaps are extremely rare, the new RFID tag was approved by the FDA in November and will be adhered to patients to prevent such disasters. And the cost of using the Surgichip system is only $6 to $9 per surgery for the chip and software installation for the first year. According to InformationWeek:
The 2-by-1-inch label gets stuck to a patient's skin near the surgical site, such as a left knee, before the operation. Before surgery begins, the tags are read by operating-room staff with handheld readers to confirm the patient and procedure.
