Innovation Makes RFID Tagging More Affordable

This week new patents were awarded to InkSure Technologies permitting the company to continue its development of chipless RFID tags. The technology creates the tags using a special ink. This form of production greatly reduces the tag's cost to less than one cent per tag. Current chip tags run at $.40 each while traditional barcode production runs at $.001. At present, Walmart requires their suppliers to use RFID tags exclusively on their high-ticket items and pallets. The granted patents will permit InkSure Technologies to accelerate production of the new tags and its affordability will make the tagging practical for more items. Projected growth within the industry is promising. According to Food Production Daily:

Global revenues from RFID systems are expected to reach $10b (€12b) by 2010 with chipless RFID systems accounting for about 30 per cent of the total, according to a study by IDTechEx.
