AMR Research recently conducted a study among 500 US companies to determine where businesses stand in regards to RFID tracking-chip technology. Of the companies in the research, almost 70% were planning to look to the technology for evaluation, piloting, implementation, or usage purposes. Despite the overwhelming interest, only 8% of businesses were expected for full implementation of RFID track-and-trace technology this year. Ultimately, 18% of those in the study claimed to have absolutely no interest in the technology. Fear of not achieving a return on investment was on over a quarter of companies' list of concerns. Despite a significant proportion of RFID refuseniks, vendors look set to do well nonetheless. The average RFID budget for 2005 will be around $550,000, rising to over $770,000 by 2007, according to AMR.
