Two thousand image capturing systems for use in China’s second generation identification card project have been ordered by public security bureaus in five Chinese bureaus. These systems which can take, archive and print photographs of citizens would be supplied by China Vision Intelligent Card Reader Company. The deal is believed to be worth $ 3.7 million. The equipment would be delivered and installed at designated sites in the provinces of Hubei, Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Sichuan and Zhejiang by the end of March 2006. It is expected that around 800 million second generation ID cards would be issued by Chinese officials by 2008.
