The proposal at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio regarding ‘Guidelines for Implementing RFid Technologies in Libraries: Privacy and Intellectual Freedom Concerns’ has come under severe criticism from several representatives of the Public Library Association (PLA) who believe that the draft is too prescriptive. They are of the opinion that the guidelines forbid specific applications. One of the examples quoted from the draft says that libraries should use hardware connections and avoid wireless connections for communications between RFid systems and ILS regarding personally identifiable information. They are against the tone that suggests that privacy and RFid can’t go hand in hand.
