Slowdown in implementation of RFid in pharmaceutical industry during 2006

According to a recent ABI Research study on RFid tracking in the pharmaceutical industry, not more than ten medications would be tagged on a large scale in 2006. This study is quite different from the evidence gathered last year which suggested a 3.5 fold increase in life sciences RFid transponder shipments between 2005 and 2006. The major reason behind the slow down is the high costs and companies strategy to execute small scale pilot projects before starting full deployments. Another reason is that The United States Prescription Drug Marketing Act of 1988 requires the pharmaceutical companies to prove that they have processes in place to prevent diversion of drugs.
