Disc theft is a $50 billion a year racket in the United States. High-definition disc manufacturer Blue Ray Technologies has announced that it will use RFID to protect its super quality HD DVD format.
RFID can be placed right on the disc itself. It will store and transmit data, telling retailers when and from what store it was purchased, as well as where and when it was manufactured and shipped.
Knowing where the disc was made is key to tracking down the piracy. Piracy is especially rampant in overseas facilities. Companies suspect that these overseas factories make legit discs by day and fakes by night.
