Complex Event Processing

EPCGlobal has set up the Software Action Group in order to arrive at the standard interfaces that will be used for the distribution of RFID-generated information among the various applications in a company. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a technique that allows for the transformation of raw EPC data into actionable information.

CEP uses Event Query Language (EQL) to go through the data and come up with relevant information. The development of event-driven applications is simplified by using EQL. EQL segregates data on the basis of time, event abstraction, etc. It is different in this respect from SQL, which is another popular database language that uses characteristics of the product such as size, type, etc in order to analyze its relationship with other entries.

CEP is particularly useful in handling real-time data generated by a large number of events. It finds regular use in tracking electronic banking transactions, credit card purchases, stock trading etc. Java and C + + can be used to develop CEP systems. CEP systems can be used to develop dynamic architectures that are known as event processing networks (EPN). EPNs enable parallel processing of multiple event streams and they can also communicate with each other.
