The companies that have given serious thought to incorporating RFID tagging into the mainstream process are evaluating the means of doing so without disturbing the optimized production levels that they have achieved. The reader types and skill sets required to implement RFID will depend upon whether the readers are treated simply as input devices or integrated into the IT infrastructure.

As RFID becomes more ubiquitous, is integrated with the mainstream production process, and reader prices drop, this PLC-centric architecture will have direct appeal to Engineering Managers interested in maintaining and upgrading the incremental RFID infrastructure using their existing personnel skill set.
