RFID at FIFA 2006

Cairos, which is an RFID sports technology start-up, had planned on using its system as a tool for verifying goals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The system was developed by Cairos, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, and Adidas. Adidas has stated that the system needs to be developed more before it can be implemented at the world cup.

The system consists of 12 readers that can track the position of a ball in real time. An RFID tag placed inside the ball emits signals of 2.4 GHz frequency at the rate of 2000/sec. The signals can be read from a distance of 300 meters.
