Funktel, which manufactures telecom solutions for communications within the company, is conducting a pilot manufacturing process in which a small RFID tag will be embedded in the printed circuit boards that are used in the handsets. CompControl, which is a German process-automation company, has developed the manufacturing process which uses RFID tags encased in glass. The tags are manufactured by Sokymat and operate in the 125 kHz range.
The system uses readers and software developed by CompControl. RFID will help Funktel to monitor its manufacturing process, improve quality control, customer service, and keep track of its inventory. It will also enable the company to weed out malfunctioning phones by reading the manufacturing and component details. The tags are hermetically sealed and carry a 40-bit unique serial number. The tags are impervious to interference from metal and electronic components.
