WHO insists on technologies like RFid for combating fake drugs

WHO wants to establish a global task force for fighting the growing problem of counterfeit medicines. It hopes that its conference meeting in Rome would lead to the creation of a force that would lead a war against fake drugs. The task force would be focusing on legislation and law enforcement, risk communications, trade and innovative technology solutions which include public-private initiatives for applying new technologies for the detection of counterfeits and technology transfer to developing countries. Fake drugs constitute more than 10% of the global medicines trade. RFid and other sophisticated technologies for product tracking within supply chain management systems are being experimented within some countries. WHO wants that measures like these must be expanded and intensified to combat counterfeit drugs.
